On to Steamtown
I’ve heard that one should have two goals for the marathon. Your best case scenario, and a fall back; something you can live with in the event all does not go well.
In the spirit of such wisdom, here are my goals for the Steamtown Marathon this weekend:
Best Case Scenario
Qualifyfor Boston with a Sub 3:15.
Fall Back
Visit Scranton’s Moses Taylor Hospital ER.
See you on the flip side.

Go get ’em Dean.

I would prefer you avoid the fallback, I vote for the best case scenario!

Can’t wait to hear all about it! Good luck!

It’s gonna hurt, but you know that already. So you can borrow my mantra: Pain is Good, Extreme Pain is Extremely Good!
Live in the moment, feel the pain, and let it fuel your fire.
And I’ll get word to you on how the Arkansas Traveller 100-miler goes for me this weekend – hope to finish by 6am Sunday morning – one hour (considering the time zone difference) before you start. If only there were a baton we could pass…

Hopefully you’ll be WITH IT, not ON IT.
Good luck.

Kestrou, you are the king of pain. May I embrace it as you have.

Thanks Buzz, I love it when oblique historical references are not lost on readers!

Go, DEAN!
On Sunday, you will be exercising ACTIVE faith by running 26 miles, 385 yards, hopefully in less than 11,700 seconds.
On Saturday, I will be exercising PASSIVE faith, sitting (and hopefully standing a few times) in Wallace Wade stadium, cheering for Duke to beat Wake in FOOTBALL.
Hoops practice starts in less than 2 weeks.
GO DUKE!

Curt,
Let’s hope I fare better than Duke Football typically does.

Dean, I’ve been thinking about you and this race all weekend. I know the work you’ve put into qualifying, and based on our runs together, I know that you were prepared. I’m sending this in the gap between your finish and when we all find out, but I’m hoping you made it.
The only thing holding you back from a truly epic achievement is that you’re in “Scranton” at the “Steamtown” Marathon. Though it looks like a good race, I think Homer would have struggled with the locale.

Well, we’re waiting!

Dean- I’m sorry this wasn’t the BQ race, but that is still a kick ass time. Nice job on the finish, and I hope you avoided the fallback goal of the ER. I heard many in Chicago met just that goal unfortunately. Was it that hot in PA as well? If so, you deserve mad props! Either way, I suggest picking another marathon quick while you are still in shape. CIM in Sacramento is in December on a fast course. 😉

Thanks Gretchen,
Unfortunately, I have no brave ER story. But a friend of mine in Chicago was “forced” to walk, though she made the cut-off point for the close-down.
Yes, I’m hitting NYC as a training run, then Rocket City, December 8th in Alabama.
